ITG G-120 Big B's Donald Trump — son of ITG B69. The Quest for Quality Seed Stock By Mike and T.J. Nelms The goat industry has seen an uptick in the interest of meat goat

production. The expansion of the homestead movement is one reason. Another is the large-scale producer who is witnessing elevated auc- tion prices. These two separate waves of interest do not necessarily move in the same direction.

Many homestead producers are multi-species owners on a rel- atively small piece of real estate. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you have the rancher with acres of pastureland.

The rancher may have other species but none of them are kept in a semi-closed or managed environment and many do not have shelter provided for their livestock.

In between these two styles of management, you have multiple scenarios and methods of livestock production. When choosing seed stock, there are many points to consider: • Space. • Budget. • Goals.

• Income-producing venture or hobby. • Management style.

• Infrastructure — pens, paddocks, rotational grazing. • Environment — under roof or open.

• Hay and feed — 100% purchased, supplemental only or 100% pasture nutrition.

These are just ideas for the questions you need to ask yourself.

You may already have a system in place and are currently operating as a successful livestock producer. As such, you should be happy to answer questions and offer advice to others concerning how your op- eration works.

Another consideration is the importance of your geographic lo-

cation. Are you in a dry climate or are you in a humid and wet cli- mate? Is your location considered to be a temperate or cold climate?
