The Power of Risk Assessments

From the tallest roller coasters to the gentlest merry-go-rounds, ensuring the safety of riders and staff is a complex and critical task. Central to this effort is the practice of conducting


thorough risk assessments. This process helps identify potential hazards and outlines how they are mitigated, ensuring a robust safety management system. A risk assessment is a documented process used to identify hazards and evaluate the risk associated with them. This involves examining every aspect of amusement ride operations to uncover hazards that could lead to accidents or equipment damage. Examples  or working from heights, weather events such as lightning or snow affecting the ride and team members, customers and team members entering the ride envelope, equipment and team members being exposed to heat or cold, and inspecting electrical equipment. It is important to consider who might be harmed, both in terms of team members, customers, 3rd party inspectors, as well as equipment. The next step is to analyze each risk and determine its


likelihood and severity of harm. This involves using a risk assessment matrix, which helps categorize risks into different    risks that could foreseeably happen and that control measures  the Midwest United States are foreseeable risks vs a plane crash.  is to reduce the impact of those hazards through control measures to mitigate their severity and/or likelihood. Examples include following Lockout/Tagout, providing shelter to  signage, and securing entrances to the ride envelope through locks and sensors.


Once control measures are in place, it is important to understand that those involved in completing tasks or working in an amusement ride need to be provided the risk assessment and understand them. This ensures they understand the why  which improves compliance. Risk assessments are a powerful tool to improve safety


at work, but they are not a one-time task. These should be reviewed at a regular interval, such as once a year, or updated whenever there are changes to the risks, equipment, or processes. By identifying and addressing potential hazards, and investing in control measures, operators can protect their business and provide a safe, enjoyable experience for all. 
