Ronald McDonald House Outreach By Lisa Hanses

The Ronald McDonald House Charities’ (RMHC) vision is “a world where all children have access to medical care and their families are supported and actively involved in their children’s care.” Research shows that patients whose families stayed at the Ronald McDonald House are the sickest, traveled the farthest distances, and spent the longest time in the hospital.

Family proximity to the hospital provides important psychological  a Ronald McDonald House. Families who stay in a Ronald McDonald House report more positive hospital experiences and a greater ability to participate in their child’s care.

Families can focus on their sick children, not their next meal.

However, COVID-19 threw a wrench in their reliance on volunteers. RMHC had to suspend all but a few essential volunteer positions. The outbreak forced them to implement many changes all designed to protect those they serve and to help decrease the potential spread of COVID-19. We all look forward to a time when we can volunteer at the House again to directly support families.

COVID Outbreak Work-Arounds

In the meantime, while their kitchens are closed to volunteers, the Committee pivoted to provide boxed meals to residents. In May of this year, we were able to provide the house with 70 boxed dinners from Café Turko in Fremont, thanks to our sponsors: Amento Group, Best Management, Columbia Bank, Evolution Architecture and NLS/ Signature Landscape!

Continuing Support

Even though we have not been together in nearly two years for this volunteer effort, I would like to thank the plethora of volunteers we have each time the call is made to make dinners for the house. I know we all look forward to getting together again and doing our small part for those that can use some love and support when they need it most.
