Statewide Elections Impacting Chiropractic

As always, the Governor’s race will impact chiropractic because any legislation that we might pass will need a Governor’s signature. The candidate pool right now is Bob Ferguson (D), current Washington State Attorney General, Mark Mullet (D), Senator from the 5th

Legislative District,

and Dave Reichert (R, former Congressman from what is now1

the 8th Congressional District.

Insurance Commissioner candidate, Patty Kuderer (D), Senator from the 48th

legislative district, shows great promise

of bringing the Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) back to representing consumers, rather than taking little action on provider issues. Kuderer has the tenacity of former Commissioner, Deborah Senn, who stood strong against insurers for consumers and providers alike. The WSCA Board of Directors endorsed2

Kuderer in the late summer of 2023. Conclusion

As Washington state braces for the 2024 state legislative elections, chiropractors find themselves at the Nexus of intersecting forces shaping the healthcare landscape. By prioritizing engagement with candidates and advocating for policies that address the Cost of Living and provider fee schedules, chiropractors seek to position themselves as proactive stakeholders in the policy making progress. With the stakes high and the electoral outcome uncertain, the 2024 elections hold the promise of transformative change, offering chiropractors an invaluable opportunity to shape the future of their profession and healthcare delivery in Washington state.

Filing deadlines for candidates begin May 6, 2024 and close May 10, 2024 at 5pm. Until the filing deadline closes we are unsure of who will be the official candidates, but in many cases there will be front-runners who raise funds as well as those who are well known in their districts. For details about candidates in your legislative district, please contact WSCA Executive of Legislation & Policy, Lori Grassi, directly.

1

Redistricting has changed the makeup of the 8th Congressional District since Mr. Reichert was in office, but essentially holds the primary areas as when he represented the district.

2

WSCA BOD endorses candidates who represent chiropractic issues, regardless of their party. WSCA works hard to balance our support in a bipartisan manner.
