REVIEW

Solution-Focused Play Therapy: A StrengthsBased Clinical Approach To Play Therapy

Authored by Elizabeth Kjellstrand Hartwig Routledge, 2020 

I experienced Solution-Focused Play Therapy to be a comprehensive practical manual for play therapists who wish to include solution- focused, strengths-based interventions with their clients as well as their client’s family. Hartwig overviews the philosophical foundations of play therapy and adds a far-reaching discussion of solution-focused therapy. The well-organized, streamlined coverage of the topics is comparable to the flow of information one would expect in academic coursework. Particular strengths of the book include easily digestible theory and tangible case examples.

In fact, I found the entire book

to be a palpable read in which I found myself looking forward to new sections. Of particular note, I found a refreshing surprise in the section that covered development and healing through a neurobiological lens.

This book is a gold mine and can add to every play therapist’s understanding of strengths-based models. The material is current and rich with information. Moreover, the material can aid readers in case conceptualization, treatment planning, and unique session interventions tailored to clients at various stages of development with varying issues.
