LEADERSHIP Editorial

A new decade has begun! With 2020 vision, we look back on what that the Association for Play Therapy (APT) community has accomplished and forward with a renewed sense of purpose to where we are heading as a professional association.

Kathryn Lebby, CAE, CMP APT President/CEO

Since 1982, APT has been comprised researchers, practitioners. therapy

four meta-analyses,

therapy and play 25

randomized control studies, and more than 50 qualitative and case studies published to date (Ray & McCullough, 2016), APT members continue to celebrate the effectiveness of the therapeutic powers of play and advance the field to further solidify its place in the world of child psychotherapy across professional disciplines.

In December 2018, the American Counseling Association recognized staff writer Bethany Bray’s cover story, “The therapy behind play therapy,” as the #5 most downloaded article in Counseling Today that year. Several APT members interviewed for that story underscored play therapy’s importance in child counseling. In December 2019, the American Psychological Association published its

top 10 most downloaded

articles to date. From their 89 journals, which had published more than 4,500 articles, Jennifer Hall’s “Child-centered play therapy as a means of healing children exposed to domestic violence” ranked #4 on that list. Dr. Hall has been an RPT since 2015.

Eliana Gil eloquently reminded us, it is time that play therapy takes its rightful place as a strong and respected psychotherapy modality (APT, 2016) – and continues to claim, through supporting research, that it is the most developmentally appropriate form of child therapy.
