REVIEW Puppet Play Therapy - A Practical Guidebook

Edited by Athena A. Drewes and Charles E. Schaefer 2018: Routledge. ISBN: 978-1-138-70722-1

Puppet Play Therapy is a well-rounded guidebook that describes the basic skills, techniques, and applications for working with puppets in play therapy. Edited and authored by leading voices in the play therapy field, the book’s five sections and nineteen chapters offer helpful guidance on selecting, using, and assessing puppet-based therapeutic interventions. It aims to comprehensively prepare play therapists to skillfully weave puppet play into their practice.

Readers will gain advanced knowledge on multiple puppet assessment techniques, including the Berkeley Puppet Interview (Ablow & Measelle, 1993), the Family Puppet Interview (Irwin & Malloy, 1975), and the Puppet Sentence Completion Task (Knell & Beck, 2000). The editors thoughtfully included four major theoretical approaches that underlie puppet play therapy so the reader could understand how puppet play could fit within their chosen theory. Several useful puppet play therapy techniques are described, spanning storytelling, problem solving, and symbolism. The guidebook concludes with how to use puppet play therapy with different

populations and in diverse settings, such as in family therapy, in trauma and sexual abuse treatment, in play therapy with adults, and within school and medical settings.

The editors have created a thorough, practical publication that provides research-backed methodology to give mental health professionals a solid foundation from which to assess, conceptualize, and implement puppet play therapy in their work with children. Mental health professionals of all experience levels should find this guidebook to be a valuable, informative, and helpful resource.
