SPECIAL SECTION CREDENTIALING: Answers to Common Questions

Welcome to APT’s new Credentialing Column, dedicated to keeping you well-informed on credentialing requirements so you can successfully navigate your way through the application process. We will be addressing questions commonly asked by applicants and supervisors. You can get the information you need from the Credentialing Standards, FAQs, and from this column. If you need further clarification, please contact the APT credentialing department.

Documentation: Using the Phase or Appendix forms? Applicants who began accruing their hours before the changes to the credentialing requirements were announced on April 1, 2019 will likely not meet all of the requirements as outlined in the Credentialing Application and Standards. Use the Appendix I form to document any play therapy instruction, experience, and supervision completed prior to January 1, 2020.

Through documentation, applicants must demonstrate an integrated and well-rounded attainment of the credentialing

requirements. This is accomplished by integrating play therapy instruction,

clinical experience, and supervision. The three-phase

approach is aligned with the educational/developmental model of how psychotherapists develop in knowledge, skills, and personal capacities. In order to obtain competency in the practice of play therapy, direct instruction must be followed by periods of application to clinical cases and be accompanied by supervision.

Applicants may provide a cover letter explaining any departure from the credentialing requirements to aid APT in eligibility

determination. You are encouraged to provide as much information as possible, more information is better than not enough.

The flexibility of the phase approach lies in the demarcation of a) the date range and b) hours for each phase. Applicants may choose to shorten or lengthen the time period of any phase to best align play therapy trainings, supervised play therapy experience, and supervision with the range of hours set forth in each phase. With that in mind, remember that applicants must complete the requirements in no less than two years and no more than seven years from start of accruement.

Helpful Tips and Reminders • Make sure you are using the most up-to-date version of the application

• Be sure to include a copy of your current license displaying the expiration date, as well as a copy of your graduate transcripts (unofficial copies are accepted)

• All play therapy experience and supervision hours earned in 2020 and hereafter must be under the supervision of an RPT-S

• Whether you finished your hours prior to or after January 1, 2020, all applicants must complete and document 5 observations with their supervisor
