REVIEW Play Therapy with Preteens
Edited by Eric Green, Jennifer Baggerly, and Amie Myrick
This book explores how to use play therapy with older children, 10-13 years of age. The authors add to the relatively unexplored body of play therapy literature involving pre-adolescents and present a comprehensive approach to integrating creative therapies into treatment with pre- adolescents and their families. They discuss a range of models and therapeutic approaches in which a play therapist could work with their pre-adolescent clients. Each chapter provides an in-depth discussion and synthesis of current literature. Finally, each chapter includes a case study and reflection section which offers readers an opportunity to further consider the approach and application within practice.
Finally, this book is a useful guide for practitioners with an aging play therapy clientele. As a former secondary school counselor, I recognize the unique needs for this age group. Children within this developmental stage have oftentimes moved beyond non-directive play yet are not mature enough for techniques employed with older adolescents or young
this developmental stage throughout the chapters and give direction to play therapists unsure of how to work with preteens.
