supervisors do to guide their supervisees and consultants, and the great responsibility they assume in protecting the public. Part of this responsibility involves gatekeeping. Simply put, gatekeeping is a process for controlling access to a profession by determining one’s suitability to enter (Brear, Dorrian, & Luscri, 2008) that involves assessing supervisees’ knowledge, skills, and dispositions, identifying      and taking “appropriate action in the form of remediation and/or dismissal of individuals unable or unwilling to change their behavior” (Homrich, DeLorenzi, Bloom, & Godbee, 2013, p. 138).


When entering a therapeutic relationship


with a child, we should all want the therapist to be well-trained and competent. Homrich et al. (2013) acknowledged that supervisors “may  128). This underscores the importance of the recent updates APT made to Registered Play Therapist (RPT) standards.


The credentialing changes that will go into effect on January 1, 2020 include a list of play therapy competencies that aspiring RPTs will need to demonstrate to their RPT-Supervisors (RPT-S). RPT-Ss are reminded   therapy as a serious modality, and models ethical behavior for other mental health professionals, especially those working with vulnerable children of the world. These changes, and RPT-Ss’ endorsement of professionals who have proven suitable to exercise the competencies (by their signature), helps APT ensure that play therapy maintains its place as a well-respected and evidence-based modality that is effective with children.
