This article aims to explore the various ways in which scavenger services can impact community associations, highlighting the positive – or dare we say heroic? – changes to waste management practices. Depending on the size of a particular building or community and its occupancy, challenges can be different for each association. Trash and recycling companies have evolved over the years to address new needs and the concerns of residents.

Scavenger services in Chicago have a long and storied history, dating back to the early 20th century. The term “scavenger” refers to the collection and disposal of waste materials, including garbage and recyclables, from residential and commercial properties. While the city

took over the responsibility of waste management, private scavenger services continued to operate in Chicago and private scavenger services continued to grow. These private companies offered waste collection services to residential and commercial properties, sometimes competing with the city’s municipal services. Over the years, the number of private scavenger services in Chicago grew, providing residents and businesses with alternative options for waste disposal. At times, Chicago mandated multi-dwelling buildings and residential community associations to procure private waste removal. That’s just a very brief history on the very interesting topic of garbage, something we will always have to manage.
