The Ice Man of Pyeongchang
ISI member Brandon Klement, owner and operator of Complete Ice Arena Services in Dallas, is serv- ing as the assistant chief ice technician for the ice hockey venues at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang, South Korea. Complete Ice Arena Ser- vices is a full-service ice resurfacer repair company, Southwest U.S. Olympia distributor and supplier of products and services for ice arenas.
“I was selected by Don Moffat, who has worked at the Vancouver and Torino Olympics,” said Brandon. “He was recommended by the IOC [International Olympic Committee] and the IIHF [International Ice Hockey Federation] to the Pyeongchang organizing committee. Don and I have worked together for 10-plus years with different organizations … I natu- rally jumped at this opportunity; it would definitely cross one major item off my bucket list that I never thought would be completed.”
Energy Company Awards San Diego Ice Arena
The San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDGE) named the San Diego Ice Arena the 2017 Energy Showcase winner in the sports venue category.
“When we took over the arena, we were at about 3,700 kWh per day and didn’t think we could come close to zero net energy,” said arena owner Mark Linssen in a press release issued by SDGE. “How- ever, after putting together a plan, being innovative and implementing over 11 energy-efficiency mea- sures we are now at 750 kWh per day and foresee a day that we may get to our zero-net energy goal.”

If you’ve ever called the ISI office, chances are you’ve heard Membership Assis- tant Shirley Rothrock on the other end of the line, with her syrupy, Southern drawl. Known for her quick wit, she keeps the ISI staff and board chuckling, and her energy at age 82 is an inspi-
ration to all. She has been with the organization since 1999 — almost 20 years!
Inventors of... PERFECT ICE
In addition to answering calls to the office, Shirley prints membership cards and other items for mail- ings, confirms membership information and helps on special projects. Her favorite part about working at ISI? “Answering the phone and helping members,” she says. “I love our members!”
Incredibly, Shirley never seems to slow down. In her free time, she enjoys water aerobics, reading, char- ity work and having lunch and dinner with friends.
“Age ain’t nothing but a number,” she says. “Enjoy every day of your life and treat people like you would like to be treated and life will be good.”
