kevin mcgrath, pcam from the president

Happy New Year! I am very excited to have the opportunity to preside over our wonderful group of volunteers and sta for 2015. Brian did a fantasc job last year and I hope I can measure up. Our chapter is growing and I am calling on every member to make growth in 2015 job one! Anne and I will be reaching out to everyone to make growth happen, so be prepared!

Our industry’s most basic mission is to provide housing in community associaon sengs. The key in our name is community and all that word encompasses. Providing housing is easy compared to building and nurturing communies. Recently a younger owner in one of our community associaons ran into an issue with the board. This owner received some incorrect and incomplete informaon about associaon living (clearly not from CAI) and launched an allout social media campaign to overturn the board’s posion. Peons were circulated, misinformaon was disseminated, and hoslity was encouraged.

At the end of the day, the board reached an accommodaon with the owner on the architectural issue. The owner declared victory…but at what cost? The healthy sense of community in this small associaon has been shaered. The enre city and local neighborhood have been disparaged. It will be years before this associaon heals and rebuilds its sense of community.

In our country, in our cies, and in our associaons we connue to see just how fragile our sense of community is. It is so easy for hoslity to ratchet out of control and drown out the voices of reason. As members of CAI we are uniquely posioned to act as both guardians and facilitators of the communies we serve. In an increasingly confrontaonal and even hosle society, we need to work to lower the rhetoric, increase communicaon and, increase educaon. Community associaons are an important part of the American fabric. Our surveys show overwhelming levels of high sasfacon among our residents, however the public image and press on associaon living is usually negave. CAI oen takes the role of defending associaon living. I hope that in the coming year we can share the many benets of our community living style in a proacve way.

I ask every member to help our chapter grow throughout the coming year so that we can accomplish this incredibly important role both for our industry and our society.
