to work-around and find solutions for displaced parking for local businesses have also been significant hurdles that the team has addressed. Another noteworthy challenge
the project team continues to face is to meet the Project Labor Agreement goals surrounding construction hiring. With this project, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) became the nation’s first transit agency to adopt a PLA
with national targeted hiring goals for a federally funded, Federal Transit Administration approved projects valued at over $2.5 million. It has taken some innovative
approaches to meet those goals, according to Gardner. Te project is anticipating to have anywhere between 550 and 800 workers at any given time and depending on the schedule. To date the project has had a total of 3,153 workers onsite performing
anywhere from clean-up work to highly specialized scopes of work. Over the project span Walsh/Shea
Corridor Constructors anticipates to have an estimated of 6,900 workers involved on the project – delivering a sizeable boost to the local economy at the same time that the project is also bringing a much needed new trans- portation resource to Los Angeles area region.
SAFETY CORNER
AGC Member Firms Embrace Safety Stand Down Events AGC of California member
contractors hosted a variety of safety awareness events in May as part of a national effort to raise awareness and increase safety in the construction industry. Myers & Sons, Griffith Company,
Hensel Phelps, DPR Construction, Walsh/Shea Corridor Constructors and numerous other AGC member firms held safety awareness, training and employee recognition events during 2016 National Safety Week, under- scoring their ongoing commitment to fostering a safety culture in their firms and improving safety in the construction industry. Walsh/Shea Corridor Constructors
sponsored a series of daily activities and events on its Crenshaw LAX Transit project. (See cover story starting on page 10 for more on that project.) Myers & Sons also held several
safety events, including a kickoff rally by its project team on the 101 Freeway from Hollywood to Calabasas project. Carleton Emerson, Southern California Safety Manager, said the
kickoff event included food, prizes and an open forum safety meeting. “We discussed the company’s core principles with regards to safety: Commitment, Empowerment, Commu- nication, Sound Practices, Training, and Account- ability, and how each of these principles can be applied to their daily work life,” he commented. Myers held safety meetings each night of safety week covering topics from vehicle and equipment safety to confined space issues and more.
Griffith Company’s rally to discuss the importance of fall protection
At Griffith Company, over 125

everyone that they are working for their families, and that their families pay the most if they are hurt,” said Griffith Company Safety Manager Chris Morgan. AGC is one of over 40 partner
groups and sponsors who join together along with Fed OSHA each year to support a safety culture through national Safety Week. Tis year, OSHA’s goal is to reach 5 million workers in the industry to highlight the importance of a safe workplace.
