Honoring Safety Excellence

AGC of California Recognizes Winners of 2021 Construction Safety Excellence Awards Competition

BY CAROL EATON A 16

GC of California recently recognized the best in safety in the California construction industry with the 34th

annual Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA). Held in conjunction with Construct 2021

in Indian Wells on November 11, the CSEA awards drew a crowd of several hundred construction executives, safety professionals, AGC members and student chapter mem- bers to see nearly two dozen AGC firms and individuals honored for safety excellence. “Safety is paramount in our industry.

It allows our most important asset, our people, to get home safely, do their es- sential work in a safe environment and continue to build California. Congratu- lations to our award winners this year who exemplify this for our industry,” said Peter Tateishi, CEO, AGC.

AGC Safety Manager Brian Mello helped moderate the awards luncheon along with 2021 Safety & Health Council Chair Donavan Seeber, ACCO Engineered Systems, and AGC of California 2020-21 President Mike Blach. Mello pointed out that the awards illustrate AGC’s commit- ment to strengthening the professional standards of contractors’ safety and health efforts across California. “Together, our members actively cre-

ate opportunities to build and strengthen our state,” Mello said. “At AGC, a ‘Culture of Safety’ is a collection of beliefs and values that are shared by owners to front- line leadership focused on the safety and wellbeing of all employees. All members of the Safety and Health Council actively drive a culture of safety across the state to better our industry.”

Spotlight on Mental Health and Construction Safety Attendees heard a dynamic keynote ad- dress from mental health expert/psychol- ogist Dr. Kristy Cane, who spotlighted the critical and timely issue of mental health in construction. Dr. Cane highlighted how the pandemic has exacerbated mental health issues and offered positive steps individuals and companies can take to support better mental health. Citing various statistics showing that

the construction industry has a higher percentage of mental health and sub- stance use issues than other sectors, and given the vital link between mental health and jobsite safety, Dr. Cane urged employers to take a proactive stance in addressing it directly with their workers. “You need to be talking to your em-

ployees and the people that you work with about mental health,” she asserted. “It is really important we encourage employees to understand what mental health assistance is available.” Following the keynote address, AGC

recognized the winners of the 2021 CSEA Awards, which honored their strong commitment to safe work practices over the past year.
