Royal Electric Company Royal Electric Company has developed two internship programs that run con- currently during the summer. Its college internship, begun in 2018, provides opportunities in project management,


estimating, virtual construction and support operations, while its skilled trades internship, formalized in 2022, provides high school students with op- portunities to work in Royal Electric’s Prefab Department. ment Manager Jeanine Jansen said the program’s success is based on a multi- tude of factors, but a couple that stand out are the support and buy-in from senior leadership at the company as well as the work and opportunities for hands-on experience the interns are provided. “From estimating interns being in- volved in the takeoff process to skilled trades interns helping with prefab items for our various projects, we provide a real-world experience to our interns,” Jansen said. “Trough our internship programs we hope to create a pipeline of talent that will work with Royal as we continue to grow. Additionally, we hope to expose our interns to work that helps them be successful in the industry, even if they don’t ultimately end up with us because you never know – you might partner with them on a future project!” What traits do these companies look for in the interns they hire? On Royal Electric’s part, “We consider individuals that are curious, driven, with positive and can-do attitudes. Also, people that like to have fun – we love having fun here at Royal!” Jansen commented. Roberts said Griffith Company looks for candidates with “a strong desire to pursue a career in heavy civil construc- tion, an appetite to learn, solid commu- nication and organizational skills, a good temperament and a demonstration of work ethic and initiative.”
