PCL Shines Spotlight on Mental Health in Construction

Approximately 800 workers on PCL’s building projects across California participated in the companywide Mental Health Stand Down day on May 30, which was part of a larger Mental Health Stand Down initiative championed by AGC of California.

P

CL Construction has taken a proac- tive stance on the important issue of mental health in the construction

industry, holding mental health stand downs on its California projects in May 2023 and continuing the conversation at other company events this year including a planned participation in National Suicide Prevention Month in September. Aaron Yohnke, President – California

Building, PCL Construction, said that approximately 800 workers on PCL’s Cal- ifornia building projects participated in their Mental Health Stand Down day on May 30, 2023, which was part of a larger Mental Health Stand Down initiative

championed by AGC of California. “A group of leaders from our business

were talking about what we could do to take a proactive step and push our industry forward on the topic of mental health,” Yohnke said. They decided to fully participate in the stand downs after hearing Peter Tateishi, AGC of California CEO; and Brian Mello, Associate Vice President, Engagement & Regulatory Affairs, talk about the planned stand down initiative during an AGC of California Los Angeles District board meeting. PCL held stand down events on its

projects big and small across multiple project types, including sports, enter-

tainment, hospitality, education, avia- tion and commercial. It also conducted mental health stand downs in its area offices of Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego.

After publicizing its stand down expe-

rience, “We received a significant amount of support including clients commenting that they want to see a mental health stand down on all of their projects going forward,” Yohnke said.
