more efficient use of labor, offers safer working conditions – both in the Blach Shop and on our jobsites – and allows for a reduction of the critical path. Moreover, because prefabrication involves repeti- tion, we’re able to perfect processes and refine costs, all of which collectively point to increased quality and reduced risk.” Te company’s recently completed
Gateway at Millbrae Station project is a showcase for prefabrication and other technologies. Various prefabrication techniques were employed, most notably an efficient, unitized glazing system and technology-driven, non-combustible pre-engineered light-gauge metal fram- ing system. An automated parking system was installed to maximize usable building space, while simultaneously increasing the amount of available parking. Finally, the project was erected using an array of VDC technology. Laser scanning and BIM, among others, were instrumental in providing detailed accuracy and miti- gating conflicts, collectively aiding in the overall project success.
Turner Embraces Technology Solutions Another AGC of California member com- pany that is leading on the technology front is Turner Construction Company, which has embraced an array of tech- nology-based solutions on its California projects over the years. According to Alan Sanoja, Northern California regional VDC manager for Turner, the compa- ny is currently seeing growing success employing AR/VR applications on its Northern California jobsites. Turner initially used AR outside the building to locate existing utilities on site. “Now we’ve moved inside the building and are utilizing QR codes (placed in locations throughout the construction site) as locators for MEP systems in our

platform, Trimble SiteVision for site utility work, and Total Station, field personnel can quickly and easily access the BIM model in the field through their iPads and track the accuracy of how items are installed compared to the model. “AR has been around for a while, but the ease of use is greatly improved with
