assume that we are only an organization for large GCs. On the contrary, there is so much more to AGC than just large contractors. In fact, associate members comprise roughly half of our membership, and even within our contractor ranks, several are specialty contractors and/or small businesses. With that in mind, here’s a question

for you all: Is AGC of California doing enough to provide opportunities for those segments who form the majority of our membership count? I will tell you, as a leader within AGC, the short answer is that we are making strides and continue to work to support each of those sectors of our membership. In recent years, we created the oppor-

tunity for specialty contractors to fill a role within the officer corps, and I am proud to remind you that AGC CA vice president Dina Kimble, CEO of Royal Electric, Sacramento, shines as our first specialty contractor in leadership as an executive officer. Additionally, with our bylaw update, which becomes effective in January, our resurrected Underground and Utility Division will create more oppor- tunity for specialty contractor members to become active. Finally, our Specialty Contractors Council offers a great forum for collaboration and networking. Within the last couple of years, AGC

has really made an effort to promote our small business contractors. We created the Small Business Council to allow them to come together and hear ideas on how they might be better. We know that the roles of DBE, DVBE, WBE, etc. businesses have long been an important part of our industry. However, we want to ensure we give members in this category every opportunity to be successful. To that end, we hosted our first Small Business Expo in Oakland last month, which drew nearly 300 participants and more than 50 exhib- itors, panelists and speakers. Attendees agreed they received valuable information on not only how to succeed in our industry

greatest diversity of business within our organization comes from our associate members. Whether a supplier, attorney, insurance broker, rental company, accountant, consultant or any of the vast array of affiliates in our industry, everyone plays a part within AGC CA. Our Associates Council creates a forum where members discuss business trends, best practices and share trials and successes. I would also encourage our associates to get in the spotlight more; if there is something of note happening in your part of the industry that affects other members, get it on a district, division or board agenda. Tis will help you gain exposure and help inform our membership at large of important matters. One opportunity available to every

member category is our Construction Leadership Council. Te CLC creates opportunities to learn leadership skills and gain industry knowledge with events like the Leaders and Legends dinner coming to SoCal on May 15. CLC participants even have a chance to give back to their communities as in the case of the Los Angeles Boys and Girls Club project featured in this issue. If by chance you don’t have any younger folks in your company, why not contribute as a mentor or role model to those within the CLC? Perhaps the most important oppor-

tunity for members of all classifications to get involved is Legislative Summit taking place May 21-22, 2019 in Sacramento. Tis is your chance to learn of the legis- lation that effects our industry, and speak about it with your legislator. Remember, AGC CA can only be the voice of the entire construction industry when every member classification is heard.
