SMALL BUSINESS COUNCIL SPOTLIGHT
all the stakeholders in this process from small businesses to agencies and primes.”
One solution she came up with,
working in cooperation with Caltrans District 4, was the “Prime-DBE Cooperative” project. Te voluntary, pilot public-private partnership brought together four prime contractors and 40-50 DBE subcon- tractors for bimonthly workshops over the course of 18 months during 2015-2017. Tat regular engagement allowed large and small business members to get to know one another, connect, and learn about a host of practical business topics as well as about the challenges they all face. Surveys completed by participants
during the Prime-DBE Cooperative showed mostly positive feedback and results. Most notably, they reported a 39 percent increase in the contracts between participating primes and DBEs. (For more details and results of the program, go to http://www.cpmlo-

Helping AGC Small Business Members Succeed
Brown is bringing the same
solution-oriented approach to her leadership of the AGC Small Business Council this year, backed up by her co-vice chairs Amanda Craft, Ferrovial USA, and Miguel Galarza, Yerba Buena Engineering. “Te end goal for 2019 is to provide
more support to the AGC small business members and to show them that AGC provides so many resources that a lot of members don’t even know about or haven’t taken the time to discover,” she said. “We want to increase awareness to members about what is available to them.” Some of the resources that AGC provides its small business members
include: Contract templates available to download.
Free legal advice accessible through the Legal Advisory Committee’s Legal hotline.

One major new initiative under-
taken by AGC and the Small Business Council this year was the Small Business Construction Expo (SBCX) held on March 22, 2019 in Oakland. Co-sponsored by AGC of California, the Expo offered an informative and interactive day of engagement with public agencies, construction manufac- turers, general contractors, specialty trades, and construction related vendors. Trough the Expo as well as
myriad other networking, business and educational events, AGC and the Small Business Council are working to create ongoing opportunities for small businesses to engage with owners and primes throughout the year. “We are opening the door that
some smaller contractors didn’t realize existed yet,” Brown added. “It is making them more comfortable to reach out to people that they met through those meetings and the networking associated with it.”
