SPECIALTY CONTRACTOR SPOTLIGHT Specialty Contractor Spotlight: Greg Timmerman
Driving Performance and Innovation at ISEC and Through the AGC CA Specialty Contractors Council
By Carol Eaton G
reg Timmerman didn’t intentionally set out to follow the same career path as his
father and uncle, both of whom were contractors/developers. In fact, he grew up convinced he would make his living in extreme sports, having raced motocross and skied competitively from the time he was little. But one too many injuries – and a
pivotal decision to complete a yearlong computer-aided drafting program after high school – opened his eyes to the opportunities of an engineering and construction career. At 19, Timmerman joined ISEC,
Inc. in Southern California, starting out in the drafting department. Headquartered in Greenwood Village, CO, with offices nationwide, ISEC is a prime trades contractor that performs commercial construction work in the aviation, hospitality, sporting, gaming, healthcare, biotech and education markets. In the 30 years since he joined
the firm, ISEC has grown from $50 million in annual volume to about $400 million today and is ranked #69 on ENR’s 2018 Top 600 Specialty Contractors list. Timmerman grew right alongside it, moving through the ranks of preconstruction, operations, middle and regional management to his current position as executive vice president. He currently oversees about 450 employees in seven offices from Texas to Hawaii.
Performance-Driven Company Te company is enjoying a period
of steady growth in an “exceptional” market, Timmerman says. “I believe we all recognize this is probably the strongest market cycle in the 30 years I’ve been in business.” Te employee-

owned company has achieved success by performing multiple scopes of work and enjoys a strong reputation in the industry. What sets ISEC
apart from its compe- tition? Timmerman ticks off the list: “We employ 800 carpenters nationwide. We have a self-performing, performance-driven model. We are expert in delivering multiple scopes of work on one project.” Te company was also an early adopter of office and field technology, investing in BIM, laser scanning/ modeling technologies and PlanGrid, among other tools. “Our mission statement is to be
innovative, and we believe software and technology is the path to improving our performance and our efficiency,” he says. “We’re expected to collaborate in models and have done that for over five years. Tat has separated us in our ability to work on the largest, most complex construction projects nationwide.” ISEC projects include many marquee or high- profile jobs like the LAX Midfield Satellite Concourse, the new

markets include archi- tectural metals, interior architectural glass work and the aviation and transportation sectors. Te company’s success in the aviation market on the west coast working for
customers like LAX, SeaTac, SFO, San Diego International Airport and others is a model that other ISEC offices are replicating across the country, according to Timmerman.
