AGC Bestows Achievement, Construction Education Friend Awards
AGC of California awarded three
coveted Achievement Awards and its prestigious Construction Education Friend Award during the virtual “Oscar-style” Installation and Awards Gala, presented by Procore on January 28, 2021. Each award honors the individual’s extensive career of service to the construction industry and to AGC.
CONSTRUCTION EDUCATION FRIEND AWARD WINNER
John E. Harriel, Jr., Morrow Meadows John E. Harriel, also known as
“Big John,” is the Diversity Manager/ Superintendent for Morrow Meadow. For more than 21 years, he has been an exceptional, transformational leader that has made a significant impact on the lives of many in his community. Harriel grew up through the ranks
in the industry from an Apprentice at IBEW Local 11 to now serving as a Superintendent. Troughout his tenure, he has focused on bringing others into the field of construction through education and workforce development efforts, championing the inclusion of disadvantaged and underrepresented. Harriel collaborated with “2nd
Call,” a community-based non-profit organization that strives to provide second chances to the formerly incar- cerated, at-risk, or proven-risk residents of South Los Angeles, Compton, Watts and Inglewood. He founded “Big John Kares” to give back to those often overlooked in the Black community. Te group provides tool bags to individuals

starting their careers in the electrical field among other endeavors.
SKILL, INTEGRITY, RESPONSIBILITY (S.I.R) ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Dan Langford, Southwest Region- al Council of Carpenters
Since starting his construction
career by joining the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters (Carpenters Union) at age 18, Langford worked his way up to become Executive Secretary-Treasurer overseeing more than 55,000 union carpenters across six states. During his tenure, he placed the organization on a path that will ensure efficiency, financial responsibility, and long-term stability. Langford has helped develop
and implement multiple programs, including the Steward Program designed to build a stronger bridge between the union and contractors. Under his leadership, the Southwest Carpenters Training Fund founded both the Bridging Outstanding Opportunities for Tradeswomen and Brothers’ Keeper pre-apprenticeship programs. Designed to recruit diverse talent to the Union, the groups have changed the lives of many Angelenos. Langford also helped implement
the Carpenters Union Participation Program, which provides carpenters community volunteering opportu- nities that included building lending libraries and homes for the homeless, organizing blood drives, classroom renovations and more. At the onset of the pandemic,
Langford personally advocated at the state and local levels alongside AGC of California to secure construction’s essential status. He worked to develop
jobsite education for COVID-19 safety, and secured PPE for union members while providing additional resources to both members
and retirees. In recognition of his leadership, Langford was invited to join the LA County Economic Resiliency Task Force as a member of the Infrastructure Development and Construction sector sub-committee.
