AGC 2021 AWARDS
Rados, A Joint Venture for “I-215 Barton
Road Interchange Reconstruction Project.” Heavy Civil Over $100 Million Winner: Flatiron West, Inc. for “Route 210 Roadway Rehabilitation”
Te Route 210 Roadway Rehabili-
tation project extended pavement life, improved traffic operations, and enhanced safety in a highly visible, dense urban area of Los Angeles County.
Te $126 million project rehabili-
tated 77 lane miles of distressed pavement sections that had been subjected to heavy traffic loading. It also enhanced roadway elements, lighting, electrical systems, and signage. Flatiron West, Inc. and Caltrans partnered to develop and implement the most cost-effective approach. Tey identified opportu- nities to improve constructability and quality while saving money by selecting alternate paving types and adjusting the construction approach. Te technically
challenging project removed and replaced approximately 400,000 square yards of pavement slabs, replaced approach slabs at 16 bridges, and included more than
900,000 square yards of diamond grinding work over 9.7 miles. Flatiron constructed 11 types of pavement — some experimental — in delivering the project.
Te project exemplifies one of
the most significant uses of precast highway pavement slabs in the U.S. Using a host of innovative technical methods and construction approaches, Flatiron finished the project on schedule and within budget. Also selected as finalist in this
category was Myers – Griffith, a Joint Venture for “LAX LULEP Progressive Design-Build.”
