before ever breaking ground. In the face of complicated sched-

uling logistics, the team set a new benchmark for virtual reality mock-ups and advanced 4D modeling. Despite the herculean pace of

construction and sheer volume of craftworkers on site, Chase Center was completed with a safety record six times lower than the industry average. Te project illustrates how large-scale construction projects can transform the built environment and set new industry standards for constructability and design. Also selected as finalists in this category

were: Clark Construction Group – California, LP for “Long Beach Civic Center” and Clark /McCarthy, A Joint Venture for “New Stanford Hospital.”

Heavy Civil Under $35 Million Winner: Granite Construction Company for “Sacramento International Airport Runway 16R-34L Rehabilitation”

14 March/April 2021 Granite Construction employed

several innovative techniques to quickly and safely rehabilitate Runway 16R-34L, a busy runway at Sacramento International Airport. Te project entailed the complete

demolition and reconstruction of the existing runway and its electrical systems. Although the existing runway was asphalt concrete, the new runway was designed using Portland cement concrete to increase the life span and durability of the pavement. However, this also increased schedule challenges due to long cure times. Granite accelerated construction

to maximize a complete shutdown of Runway 16R-34L from April to October of 2019, which required all flights to be consolidated to a single open runway. Te team achieved all project milestones through careful, up-front planning and scheduling and strong coordination with all parties. Granite self-performed all concrete

batching and paving, delivering an incredibly smooth finished runway.

Construction on a project to improve the capacity and safety of Interstate 80 through Colfax, CA. Te project added a 3-mile-long “truck-climbing” lane, widened the east and westbound shoulders and reconstructed a portion of an underpass. Teichert overcame an array of

challenges. During the second of three initial stages of construction, crews drilling into the slope walls unknow- ingly exposed an old embankment which was holding back an old slope failure. A large piece of slope broke off in the middle of the night, releasing over 60,000 cubic yards of rock and dirt that slid onto I-80. Teichert devised a quick solution to build a new 4,400-square-foot retaining wall. Te team navigated additional

hurdles ranging from a major bridge repair issue to unusually stormy weather conditions, drainage issues, and the need to work at high elevations along steep grades while maintaining traffic safety. Trough perseverance, communication, and teamwork with Caltrans, Teichert completed the project on schedule and under budget. Also selected as finalist in this category

were: Te Walsh Group for “Mel Leong Treatment Plant Upgrades” and Myers
