Battalion was formed aſt er a call by the Virginia Committee of Safety to form volunteer units for the protection of the Colony. Virginia was divided into 16 districts, and each one was instructed to “raise and discipline” a battalion “to march at a minute’s notice.” From this order, the famous name was
born. Men from Culpeper, Orange and Fauquier fi rst gathered on July 17, 1775, under a large oak tree in “Clayton’s old fi eld,” later called Catalpa Farm, close to today’s Yowell Meadow Park, according to historical records. Across the county markers and
monuments honor the Culpeper Minute Men, including a VDOT marker at “Clayton’s fi eld,” the Daughters of the American Revolution Monument at Yowell Meadow Park and the Culpeper Minute Men Obelisk erected by the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in 1933 at the intersection of South Main Street and Orange Road.
