CTEC gives students real world experience An extensive recent addition to
Culpeper County’s education system is the Culpeper Technical Education Center (CTEC). Students from Culpeper County High School or Eastern View High School who enroll in CTEC get a mix of hands-on instruction and real workplace experience. Te professional education
opportunities available to students are far reaching and varied, according to Randi Richards-Lutz, Culpeper County Public Schools Director of Career & Technology Education. Not only in nursing and culinary fields, which existed before the 2021-2022 school year opening of CTEC, but now in automotive, carpentry, cosmetology, cyber security, draſting, plumbing, EMT, HVAC-R refrigeration and more. When the center was built, the staff
made sure to consult with fire and rescue and automotive sectors, among others, to acquire the most up to date, industry- standard equipment possible so they could train students on what is used in today’s workplace.

Private schools CTEC Principal Shaun Summerscales
explained that the program wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous support from community program partners, such as the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce, local government and the community college system. Many businesses and nonprofits provide financial assistance and/or give of their time as teachers or guest speakers during the year. For both students and businesses, the
program is paying off. “I love being able to make a difference,
giving students something concrete to use in their lives,” said Richards-Lutz, a former high school tech student herself.
Several private institutions serve just under 500 students: • Epiphany Catholic School • Culpeper Christian School • Banner Christian School • Grymes Memorial School • Wakefield Country Day School
Head Start
Culpeper also recently expanded its Head Start program, which helps prepare preschool children. Early Head Start begins at the toddler and even infant stage. The programs help children from low-income families prepare to succeed in school by promoting development through learning, family education and health.
