Local education spans the test of time EDUC A T ION


One of the great stories of 2023 was


the restoration and revitalization of the former George Washington Carver Regional High School building on its 75th anniversary. T e school’s stone frontage that


previously read “Piedmont Vocational School” was fi nally replaced to refl ect its original namesake. T e longtime eff ort was a culmination of a dedicated alumni group, community, county government, nonprofi ts, faith communities and historians. The school’s story began in the days


of segregation, from its founding in 1948 to 1968, when Culpeper’s schools integrated. The students — who hailed from Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison and Orange counties — their families and teachers made the school a source of pride for the region’s minority communities.
