The American Revolution at 250: Culpeper, Te legacy of the iconic Culpeper
Minute Men of American Revolution fame continues to be honored in Culpeper through monuments, historical markers, murals and business names. Two Minutemen stand vigilant in Culpeper County’s official seal while another stands tall next to a downtown street. Many residents may remember Claude
Inskeep Guinn in the 1980s and 1990s portraying a Minute Man in parades and other events. His signature tilted hat, musket and liberty shirt kept the history of Culpeper’s original citizen soldiers fresh in the minds of county residents and visitors for many years. Te Culpeper Minute Men flag still
proudly proclaims “Liberty or Death” and “Don’t Tread on Me.” Tis spirit of resilience, independence and liberty are an
essential set of ingredients for the citizens of Culpeper County. Tis spirit will certainly be refreshed
in 2026 when Virginia will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Established by the General Assembly
in 2020, the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250), serves to commemorate the anniversary of the American Revolution, the Revolutionary War and the independence of the United States. A primary goal of the commission is to
facilitate a multi-year schedule of events, including three national signature events annually through 2026, as well as dozens of Virginia-specific events to celebrate key anniversaries. Locally, there will be events planned
in Culpeper to support this initiative. Te scope and planning are still evolving. Town staff is working with the local VA250 committee and Museum of Culpeper History on historical signage throughout Culpeper. It’s also working on developing a conference and anniversary style event to commemorate Culpeper’s history and its connection to the Revolutionary era. Culpeper County’s Development and
Tourism office is taking a key role in the planning for VA250. “Culpeper has a local committee,
comprised of historians, local history groups including Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons the American Revolution, the Museum of Culpeper History, Windmore Foundation, the Germanna Foundation and others,” said Director of Economic Development
