SWAT awards presented at WSI
Te Irrigation Association announced the winners of the 2022 Smart Water Application Technology awards on Oct. 5 during the WaterSmart Innovations conference in Las Vegas. Tese annual awards recognize water providers for their commitment to promoting outdoor water conservation by increasing engagement, education and partnerships with important stakeholders. Te Outstanding Public Engagement Award was presented to the
Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership in California for its Water Smart Landscape Design Template project. Tis project was a response to the devastating October 2017 wildfires in Sonoma and Napa counties in California. To assist those rebuilding, the Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership created eight free permit-ready landscape design templates and a companion guide that encourage the installation of water-efficient, climate-appropriate and sustainable landscapes. More than 40% of all re- built homes in the region have utilized the templates, leading to an esti- mated 8.7 million gallons less of water used each year. Te Outstanding Industry Partnership Award was presented to the Inland Empire Utilities Agency in Chino, California, for its Residential Small Site Controller Upgrade Program. Tis program focuses on improv- ing residential outdoor irrigation efficiency through in-person customer educational training and upgrading nonweather-based irrigation control- lers to smart controllers. Since 2016, the program serving western San Ber- nardino County has upgraded a total of 2,340 sites with 2,669 weather- based irrigation controllers for an estimated lifetime water savings of 1,105 acre-feet. Applications for the 2023 SWAT awards will open in early 2023. More information is available at
