G & M Radiator Manufacturing

Company Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

JEFF THORPE SAYS he got into the cooling systems business by accident. “I come from Sheffield, England, which is a famous steel- producing city. At the age of 17, I applied for a job at a local branch of Marston Radiators in my hometown. Pretty sure I thought they made central heating radiators when I went along for an interview, but I got the job which involved me spraying the radiators after repair or rebuilding, as well as any other odd job that needed doing,” said Thorpe.

In the workshop, Thorpe learned how to repair and reassemble radiators before eventually running the stores himself. “I’ve worked in just about every area of the industry,” said Thorpe. In 1993, he moved to Glasgow, Scotland to work as G & M Radiator’s Quality Manager before moving into sales and marketing and then purchasing and stock control. “I was offered the position of Managing Director earlier this year. The previous MD, John Blake, who was my friend and colleague during all my time here became ill at the start of the COVID crisis and succumbed to cancer on May 1, 2021. So, the promotion was tinged with a great deal of sadness. John was heavily involved in the acquisitions that led to the current G & M Group of companies.

Established in 1964, G & M Radiator is a manufacturer and stockist of heat exchange products. The company manufactures a massive variety of heat exchange units in copper/brass, steel, and aluminium. The G & M Group now consists of several companies in the same field with locations worldwide.

The company’s headquarters have been in Scotland for more than 55 years. G & M’s lineage stretches back to Holman Engineering which was registered in 1919 in Glasgow. G & M founder Geoff Shrigley was a fan of all things American, and that included American cars. In fact, the company’s official birthday is the Fourth of July. Geoff’s father
