MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

who have been here for 25, 30, 35 years, but they’re not going to be here forever,” said Thorpe. “Finding people of the same calibre to replace them is a challenge as there is a huge labour shortage in the UK just now.”

The company has recently purchased a new Trumpf Punching Machine costing $250,000, which is a big investment for the business. But what’s interesting is that G & M also has a row of presses that date from the 1950s that are still functional. “The old and new engineering working side by side is amazing, the old and new working well together,” said Thorpe. “Even with new technology, you still need a guy to sit there, put the metal in, put that guard down, press the lever and then take out the part. That’ll never change.”

G & M has been involved with NARSA/IDEA for many years. “I have known of NARSA since the start of my career,” said Thorpe. “The UK had its own association for a time, but this folded many years ago. The fact that NARSA/IDEA represents the global heat exchange market makes it vital at all levels in the industry. Just knowing that a member on the other side of the world faces the same challenges as we do in our little corner of the globe is reassuring. And as radiator folk through and through, we love seeing the photos of all the different products that are being overhauled in workshops around the world. G & M has always supported NARSA/IDEA and has been proud to publicise our membership and association whenever we can.”

“Although I fell into this industry almost by accident, and it’s really all I know, the appeal for me is the huge diversity of customers, suppliers, and products all linked by this common theme of heat transfer,” said Thorpe. “And although new technologies will come along, there will always be a need for heat transfer in some form or another.”
