publisher’s message FOCUS ON PEOPLE

If nothing else, the pandemic high- lighted just how important people and relationships are to us person- ally and professionally.

One area of school district man- agement that has been hard hit over the past year has been human resources. Personnel have been chal- lenged to navigate COVID-related

leave policies, address hiring challenges amid a labor shortage, and keep employee benefits and payroll on track and on time—often while working from home. This issue of School Business Affairs focuses on several of those topics. With regard to teacher shortages, Jason Midwood shares how his school district in Rhode Island established a teacher fellowship program that provides each classroom with a permanent “substitute” teacher who can step in when necessary. In addition, an article from Edunomics staff members Chad Aldeman and Katie Silberstein details how districts are providing monetary incentives for teachers to stay in the classroom. Anne Marie Tucciarone-Mahan details how districts can ensure fair hiring practices, and Brian Middleton- Cox describes the elements of an effective onboarding program, including orientation and mentoring. Butler 53 Superintendent Paul O’Malley shares his dis-

trict’s succession plan, developed to ensure stability and support the district’s emergency operations plan. Getting down to the basics, Lynn Knight and Linda Mont provide best practices for maintaining confidential- ity and privacy in the business office, and Maria Anne Parry reviews the basics of employee compensation. How did you and your staff like working from home? Stephanie Weese shares some of her lessons learned as she reflects on the challenges and benefits of working remotely. Nan Wodarz reminds us to pursue our purpose and our passion in the Management Briefcase column. In the Legal Affairs column, Charlie Russo and Tim Morse offer insight into the legal aspects of educating students who are on the autism spectrum. We can’t do what we do without our wonderful vol- unteers. Please don’t miss our salute to ASBO Volunteers on pages 28–29. Our members are the heart and soul of the association. If you are not already involved with an ASBO committee, I invite you to explore the possibilities.
