s we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and explore new ways of working, including remotely, I find myself reflecting on where we have been and what we have
learned. I want to make sure that I don’t lose sight of the good things that came from having to adapt quickly to a new way of working, but I also want to learn from my mistakes so I don’t repeat them.
Could this be an opportunity to approach our work differently?
Remote Work as a Necessity
If the COVID-19 pandemic proved anything, it proved that school business professionals are agile thinkers who can quickly adapt.

In March 2020, with little notice, the entire state of Michigan shifted to remote work. The original two-week shutdown ended up lasting three months. Livingston Educational Service Agency personnel and business offi- cials in school districts around the country quickly found ways to complete payroll, budgets, accounts payable, and human resources tasks while working from home. As I look back on the experience, I recognize that I initially was in survival mode, determining the day-to- day tasks we needed to finalize and the equipment and technology needed to complete those tasks. Because we thought this situation was temporary, we simply paused all other projects while we focused on the necessary daily tasks.
When the initial two-week shutdown extended into four weeks and beyond, I shifted my focus to developing
