examined the research and con- cluded that despite commonly held beliefs to the contrary, professional learning for teachers is effective in improving instruction and stu- dent learning. Their report, Dispelling the
Myths: What the Research Says About Teacher Professional Learn- ing,” suggests: • Professional learning can lead to changes in teachers’ skills and instructional practice that signifi- cantly improve student learning.
• Despite claims that professional learning is more effective for early career teachers than for veteran teachers, it is beneficial for teach- ers at all levels.
• Professional learning programs do not need to be job-embedded and time intensive to be effective. Programs of varying lengths and formats can be beneficial when time is used wisely.
• Professional learning programs that focus on instructional prac- tices are more likely to improve student learning than those focused on increasing teachers’ content knowledge.

Superintendent Salary Study
AASA, The School Superintendents Association, recently released its 10th annual superintendent salary study. The survey, based on nearly 1,800 responses, gauges school dis- trict leader compensation and ben- efits. Among the findings: • Superintendents are getting younger. In 2022, more than four out of 10 (42.5%) were between 30 and 50 years of age compared to 35.1% in 2012. Only 10.3% of superintendents were older than
60 years of age in 2022 compared to 19.4% in 2012.
• A superintendent’s median sal- ary ranged from $105,000 to $228,541, depending on district enrollment (size).
• As in previous years, salaries vary by gender, with males reporting higher base salaries. Female super- intendents earn approximately 96% of what male superinten- dents earn.
• In terms of longevity, nearly half (46%) of respondents have five years or fewer experience as a superintendent.
• Nearly 43% of respondents hold a doctorate in education (EdD), followed by 38% with a master’s degree; 9.4% hold a doctoral research degree (PhD).
