From our President and CEO

A New Beginning Arises as Another Beginning Ends

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”

Te Roman philosopher Seneca summarized many of life’s events with this simple yet profound statement. Te choices we make in our lives dictate change, leading us to take chances. Tose chances set out new paths for us, guiding us in new directions and adventures.

Tat’s happening right now at MBA as new beginnings present opportunities to pursue.

Aſter leading this great association for nearly 32 years, I have decided the time is right to retire. And just as I was excited to have the opportunity to lead MBA, I am equally excited about the direction of MBA under its next leader, Jackson Hataway.

Effective June 1, Jackson became president of MBA while I continue to serve as CEO. When I retire at the end of May in 2023, Jackson will assume both titles of president and CEO.

When we announced Jackson’s appointment this past spring, congratulations poured in from bankers across the state and the country. Hearing these warm sentiments affirmed what I already knew — with his vast knowledge of our industry, Jackson is the right individual to lead our association as banking undergoes changes. Tose changes involve the way we operate and conduct business, how we attract and retain talented individuals to pursue careers in banking, how we advocate for our customers and communities with

lawmakers and regulators, and how technology plays a vital role in all that we do. I have no idea what those changes will entail, but I know this — Jackson and the team here at MBA will pursue opportunities that strengthen our industry and ensure economic prosperity in our communities.

As we begin the transition with Jackson, I’m handing off batons to him. Starting with the next issue of magazine, you’ll see a message from Jackson in this space as I weigh in on topics occasionally. For the next six months, I plan to be here for Jackson as much as needed, guiding him on issues that arise and offering my thoughts. Aſter that, as the New Year approaches, you’ll see less of me as the focus turns to Jackson and his leadership at MBA.

Max Cook, President and CEO Missouri Bankers Association

Each leader has his or her own style, and great leaders learn from others. To Jackson and all the leaders in our banks, I leave you with the following advice that has served me extremely well throughout my career at MBA.

“Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don’t interfere as long as the policy you’ve decided upon is being carried out.” –Ronald Reagan
