in Springfield — and a Banking Leadership Missouri graduate — and past MBA Chairman Shaun Burke, president of Guaranty Bank in Springfield. We listened as these talented men and women shared their views about banking’s future — how a bank will look, growth strategies, talent acquisition and development, challenges facing the industry and qualities essential for future bank leaders. And they asked us several good questions. Teir questions and presentations showed how much they are completely 100% engaged in their banking careers — which is exactly what we want for the next leaders in our industry. Like many of their peers across this state, the men and women in Banking Leadership Missouri care about their customers, their co-workers and communities. Tey care about the banking community and their roles in helping others — their
teams and their customers — succeed.
Spending time listening to the ideas from Banking Leadership Missouri reiterates a key message I’ve shared throughout my year as your chairman — developing the next group of exceptional leaders for our industry. For these future leaders and those currently leading banks across our state, I offer a bit of advice.
• Do things in your own style. Someone may not perform or lead in the same manner you would, and that’s perfectly fine. Tere’s a reason that individual has a certain role — that person has the knowledge, ability and talent to succeed.
• As the industry changes, you also must change. If you don’t, you’ll get passed by another.
• Bring someone along with you. For our customers and communities to thrive and succeed, we must ensure the next group of leaders know and understand our industry and the importance of establishing relationships, especially with our elected officials. As I have shared, if we don’t speak up for our industry, who will?
• Don’t be afraid to say “Yes” … you never know where that “yes” may lead you.
I have said “Yes” so many times in my career, and I would do it all over again. It led me to this — having the incredible opportunity to lead our great association. It’s been an honor to serve as your chairman.
