Spark Career Growth

could be in places you didn’t expect. It could be the cashier at the local grocery story who can strike up a conversation with any customer, all the while ringing up and sacking your groceries efficiently. Visit local colleges or high schools (I’d suggest bringing pizza because free food always attracts students) to showcase the many opportunities in banking because our industry needs individuals with a variety of skills and expertise — it’s not strictly business degrees anymore. You should always have an eye out for talent. Even though you may not have a job opening at the time, I have discovered there is never a wrong time to add talent to your organization.

Equally as important as your recruitment strategy is your employee retention programs. Simply giving an individual a job isn’t enough anymore — a job with no growth potential

will typically result in a bored employee who leaves your bank for another opportunity. In the end, you may be leſt with employees who are okay with not being challenged or are fine working at an organization that is good with the status quo. You can’t successfully build any organization with employees who aren’t looking to better themselves. Te inability to grow your bank or, worse yet, a slow decline in assets is another leading cause for a bank to exit the market.

We are quite fortunate to have an association offering numerous resources that aid bankers’ career growth. From conferences to banking schools to seminars and webinars, MBA’s vast educational programs cover a multitude of banking aspects that allow your staff to strengthen their skills. Forward MBA’s emails on upcoming events to your

staff and encourage them to attend programs that would benefit their responsibilities at the bank. If your staff requests to attend MBA’s banking schools or a two- day conference, give them your approval. Investing in your employees will reap substantial benefits for your staff, customers and community.

When we started out in banking, each of us had someone who saw our potential and presented opportunities to learn and advance in our careers. Now, it’s our turn to do the same. Te opportunities you extend to your employees could develop into significant career growth. Who knows … that someone could be a future leader of the MBA.

MBA’s podcast explores topics relevant and interesting to bankers. Our fun, engaging conversations help you stay ahead of what’s happening in banking. Our Two Cents with MBA is on MBA’s website, iTunes, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify.
