discovered EE in Hong Kong, going on to become international vice presi- dent and co-author of Evangelism Explosion, 4th Edition. Retired ARP pastor, missionary to Pakistan, and Erskine professor Gary Letchworth served under Tom as EE’s director of Asia. Gary trained two hundred thousand Asians to share their faith, who today are leading two million Asians a year to Christ. That is mul- tiplication.

What is EE not? EE is not primarily an outreach

ministry. Rather, it is a discipleship ministry that necessarily does out- reach. It exists to help the local pastor equip his flock for their own personal and church outreach. Every believer has friends, family members, and neighbors who they want to reach for Christ. You are equipping them for this. Many of them are also leaders in your church’s ministries, both the “in reach” (Officers, EE, Choir, CE, Youth, Children, Small Groups, etc.) and out- reach (EE, V.B.S., Festivals, Mission Trips, Mercy Ministries, etc.) Picture every leader in your church passion- ate and equipped to make disciples in their area of ministry.

What about the EE presentation? It is composed of three parts: the

introduction, the Gospel presenta- tion, and the commitment. Different situations (home visits, marketplace contacts, daily life, etc.) call for differ- ent introductions. However, regard- less of the starting place, the introduc- tion should always include a personal testimony, two questions to discover the person’s spiritual condition, and a request for permission to share the Gospel. The Gospel presentation consists

of five points (Grace, Man, God, Christ, Faith), with each point hav- ing two sub points. Each point has an illustration, and each sub point has a Scripture verse. You will discov- er that people have bits and pieces of Gospel understanding floating around in their heads. You are sim- ply putting it together for them in a

clear, concise, comprehensive, and compelling manner. (Note: The EE Gospel presentation is in full agree- ment with the questions for member- ship in the ARP Form of Government and with the Gospel presentation currently on the ARP website. None- theless, pastors are free to modify it for their church. Just don’t be like the person to whom D.L. Moody replied, “I like the way I do evangelism better than the way you don’t do it.” And perhaps ask yourself this question, “How much “theology” did I know the day I came to Christ?”) The third element of the presenta-

tion is the commitment. We do not want to encourage premature or un- informed commitment, but neither do we want to leave the person in their lost condition. Their tomorrow is not certain. It would be irresponsi- ble not to offer a call to commitment. However, before leading in commit- ment, we make certain that they un- derstand the Gospel and the radical commitment they are making. If they are not ready to make a commitment, we seek a follow-up appointment. I do not push for commitment. My goal is simply to leave the person closer to Christ than I found them. If a commitment is made, there is a clear procedure for follow up. This ministry stands or falls on

the quality of your training and your trainers. They will do what they see you do. You cannot properly begin EE church-wide until you are thor- oughly trained, and have trained one or two others. Once you have these trainers, who are committed to training others, you can offer it to the whole church. Now that it is an established ministry of your church, and you have trained a teacher-train- er, you can step aside from its leader- ship. However, wisdom dictates that you at least continue as a trainer. There are several ways to get

started. One is to attend a multi-day training event for pastors and key leaders. We offer these from time to time in different areas of the USA. For a schedule, consult the EE web- site, eeworks.org, looking under

the TRAINING tab for US Train- ing Schedules. You will notice that there are several curricula- Everyday Evangelism (EV2), XEE (for the Mil- lennial generation), Hope for Kids, Share Your Faith (SYF), etc. Scholar- ships and discounts have been made available for ARP pastors and church members. Please contact me at bmc- clain@eeworks.org for these. Also, our representatives are open

to scheduling a one day SYF work- shop to introduce your church or presbytery to the ministry. I caution that the value of the SYF is limited if you are not ready to follow it up with further training. This problem is solved by first attending a multi-day leaders’ training. Finally, you could purchase the ma-

terials (including the textbook!) and begin studying and sharing the pre- sentation while training one or two key people. Within a few months you would have two or three experienced trainers and could offer it to the whole church. Perhaps more importantly, why not make a commitment to daily share your faith? My spiritual father taught me that the proper question is not, “Do you have an opportunity to share Christ every day?” but, “Will you take the first opportunity?” Let me finish by first thanking Moderator Holmes for highlighting EE at Synod and for giving me the op- portunity to present this article. I join him and ONA in asking you to please do some type of personal evangelism training. If each Presbytery simply matched Northeast Presbytery’s 3.3% adult profession rate, we would more than double our adult professions of faith. Let’s take down the wolf! May the Lord bless the ARP Synod!?

Dr. Bill McClain is a retired ARP minister of the Florida Presbytery. He labors outside the bounds of presbytery with Evangelism Explosion, Int’l.
