Sherwood’s Story BY RON BEARD

Sherwood was upset. He wanted to help his Dad keep the yard neat and clean, but there were so many trees full of leaves. He raked and raked. He filled up his red wagon over and over, but when Dad got home that afternoon, there were still leaves everywhere. Leaves on the trees, leaves blowing around in the breeze, and leaves all over the same ground that Sherwood had raked earlier.

He told his Dad, “I don’t know why we have to have fall. Why don’t we just have summer and then skip to winter. They aren’t nearly as much work as fall is!”

His Dad told Sherwood that he needed to think carefully about that. If there were no fall, there would be no pumpkins, no Thanksgiving, and no fun walks in the colorful woods. There would be no pleasant temperatures, just hot or cold.

After dinner, they went to Sherwood’s room where his Dad picked up Sher- wood’s Children’s Bible. He opened it to the very first book, Genesis, to verses about God’s creation. First he read, ”In the beginning God created the sky and the earth.”

Then he read about the third day of creation when God said “Let there be lights in the sky to separate day from night. These lights will be used for signs, seasons, days and years. They will be in the sky to give light to the earth. And it happened.”

It was God who created seasons and another later verse said, “God looked at everything he had made, and it was very good.”

Dad said, “So God created seasons because it was good for all of His cre- ation.” As they talked about it Sherwood began to understand. It is true that every season is full of wonderful things, blessings given by God for us to enjoy.

Finally Dad said, “God gave us His creation because He loved us. He also loved us enough to send Jesus, His Son, to save us from our sins. That is the very best blessing in every season of the year.”

The leaves are changing colors, the air is turning cooler, and summer is officially over. Our regular school and work routines are back on track. That sentence may be a bit of a bummer to you, and that’s normal. However, it’s important to know what God says about our schoolwork, chores, and overall everyday lives.

“Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31. Isn’t that amazing? God wants us to do everything for Him, even the little things like eating and drinking.

Bumblebees are only one of God’s wonderful creations. They all work together. They go from flower to flower, collecting pollen and nectar to make delicious honey. On their way, they spread pollen from plant to plant. Without bees, many plants would not grow!

God designed all of his creation with many different jobs. The main job, however, is to bring God glory! So we should always remember to do our best at our daily jobs and to do them for the Lord. It’s hard, and we all need to work on it. You may even discover that chores can be a lot more fun if you have a good attitude. Talk about this with your family and discuss how you can do this. Be sure to ask God for his help!
