Jeanne Johnson Banks MEMORIAL
Suffolk, Virginia - Jeanne Johnson Banks was born in I934 in Portsmouth, Virginia. She passed away peacefully on February 13, 2022, surrounded by her children.
South Carolina at age I6. It was there she met John S. Banks whom she wed in 1952. Their marriage lasted 68 years until John’s death in October 2020.
During those years, Jeanne supported John’s career in the ministry of the ARP de-
Jeanne’s commitment and service continued as John joined the U.S. Army in 1966. Their 27 moves began in South Carolina followed by many stateside posts and included John’s retirement from the Army. Wherever she went she never felt like a stranger, al- ways making friends and doing her best to use her God given gifts.
Her service included her dedication to the Protestant Women of the Chapel in Ger-
many, eventually leading to her work with the European chapter and traveling around the continent. Upon her return to Virginia, she became involved with Pilot International and served as a charter member of the local branch, eventually becoming President and serving as Governor for the Virginia District.
For many years she also led the volunteers at the local hospital in Suffolk and be-
came president of the Virginia Association of Hospitals and Healthcare Volunteers. She was also instrumental in raising funds to provide a Christmas wreath on every gravesite at the local Veteran’s cemetery and founded the non profit association, Hor- ton Wreath Society.
She was an active member of the Suffolk Presbyterian Church for many years. She was involved in the choir and music ministry throughout her years as a Pastor’s wife, but cooking and baking for others was her true passion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John and their infant daughter Mary Alice, as well as her parents and siblings. She will be mourned by her children, John (Nancy Barton), Thaddeus, Timothy (Susan Douglas), Sarah (Manfred Bowen), and Deborah. She also leaves three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, in-laws Mary Ellen Johnson, Cynthia and Barry Cooke, Cy and Candi Lemmond, Paula Banks Chandler and many nieces and nephews.
