Eleanor Richardson Receives Julia Hardeman Rhodes Award
By Susan Tanner E
leanor Richardson is the 2022 recipi- ent of the Julia Hardeman Rhodes award. The service was held fol- lowing worship at Pinecrest Presbyte- rian Church in Hendersonville, NC. Vicki Marsh, secretary of ARP Women’s Minis- tries, presented the history of the award and how Rhodes started Women’s Minis- tries. I was able to share a few personal sto- ries about Eleanor who has done so much through faithful and continuous service. While working at Bonclarken I enjoyed game nights at Eleanor’s house, dinners, and hanging out with candlelight when Hurricane Ivan came through. I learned a lot from Elea- nor and the ARP denomination but the main thing was personal connections with others.
churches. She worked at Erskine College for ten years and then at Bonclarken for 17 years. I would say she is connected to the ARP denomination.
Born in Newton County, Georgia, Elea-
nor grew up in the Hopewell ARP Church. Eleanor worked full-time as secretary to the Business Manager Charles Carlisle at Erskine College while earning her degree in Christian Education. She worked a couple of years af- ter that as well. Eleanor was the secretary for two Erskine presidents, Dr. Lesesne, and Dr. Wightman. She served in the legal department of Coca-Cola, as assistant to the vice president for development at Georgia Tech; as executive director of the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc; as director of development for the Southeast- ern Region of Boys Clubs of America; and as - exander where she worked closely with Presi- director of development at Bonclarken. What a remarkable career.
Jane Shelton Dale who nominated Elea- nor said this, “Imagine Bonclarken without the YAB, the youth cottages, the ropes course and climbing tower, Headspring Pavilion, the Lodge, and the back porch. All these things, and more, like refurbishing and preserving the exterior of the hotel are a result of Eleanor Richardson’s work.” When she was received into the Honor
Roll of Visionaries and Servant Leaders at Bonclarken, they had this to say, “Eleanor Richardson has spent a lifetime advancing many causes that were meaningful to her and enriched the lives of countless others. She was blessed and continues to be a blessing through her capable and effective leadership. Her dedication to Bonclarken and the Associate Reformed Presbyterian denomination makes her exceptionally worthy for this award.” Her impact on the ARP denomination
reaches far and wide. Her impact on my life goes deep. Thank you Eleanor for your faith- fulness and passion over the years. We are honored to present you with the Julia Harde- man Rhodes Award. Eleanor was presented a Camp Joy brick which will be placed at Boncalrken along with a small gift. Sue Brogi, Presi- dent of Women’s Ministries at Pinecrest, - ed all to a reception following the service.
