Drifting Drifting By Rev. Doug Jones

so that we do not drift away.” In the 1st chapter of Hebrews, the

writer, under the inspiration of The Holy Spirit, stated that in the past God had spoken to our forefathers through the prophets, but “in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son,” Jesus Christ. Biblical history records that God had also spoken on many occasions through angels and the writer of Hebrews goes to great lengths to point out that God’s Son, Jesus, is far superior to the proph- ets and to the angels. Therefore, His word should take precedence over anything else mankind has heard. The dictionary says to drift is “to aimlessly wander, or to carelessly - rection, or to slip or slide – sometimes out of control.”

Drifting

Is that not exactly what has been happening to the United States for at least 65 years? Our forefathers fought

other nations in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War, and World War I with the conviction that God was on our side. Literally millions of prayers were made by those who were genuinely concerned about the future of America. There was no doubt in the minds of most Americans that  and sustain the Godly principles upon which our nation had been built. As a direct result of our Christian faith and with God’s help and guidance, the years following World War II were spent helping to rebuild the very nations we had defeated, as well as the nations who had been our allies and had suf- fered devastating physical damage during the war. It was during those years when almost the entire world was clamoring for our help or lining up to be our friends that many of our people began to get the idea that we were invincible – that all our victories and accomplishments had been the result of our own abilities and endeavors. More and more of our people began to drift away from the God whom we as a nation had always worshipped and depended upon. It didn’t happen overnight! For years following World War II the majority of our people continued to seek God’s guidance for their lives and continued to presume that God would not let anything disastrous happen to America. The Korean War came and went – and we asked God to protect our troops – and He    many people around the world began to wonder whether the United States could be counted on – whether our word really meant anything. And, of course, we are all aware that the Korean War was just the beginning of America’s drift toward compromise. In the Vietnamese War our political leaders placed such restrictions on our military that it was impossible to gain a complete victory – and the same thing happened in Iraq, and the same thing is happening today.
