helping in our church. We also have a certain standard to adhere to. 1 Timothy 3:11 states, “In the same way, women who are servants in the

everything they do.” Trust me, I know it is hard not to gossip. It is a constant struggle and I pray
may be speaking to the choir here, but prayer has led me to write this article. My husband and I spend a lot of time talking about re- formed theology and how it impacts our lives. That got me thinking about how someone new to the church may not understand or know the role of women in our churches. The Bible has much to say regarding this, be- ginning with Genesis 2:18, “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suit- able for him.’” From the beginning, we were designed to be helpers. This can be done through helping our hus- bands, helping our communities, and

about it regularly. No one ever said being a Christian was going to be easy. Titus 2:3-5 also gives us guidance, “The aged women likewise, that they be in behav- ior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.” Ephesians 5:22-24 tells us, “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own hus- bands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.” I think these two scriptures are often misunderstood when it comes to “obe- dient” and “submit.” These words do not mean to be belittled or subservient. Our husbands are the spiritual heads of our households as are the pastors and elders spiritual heads of our church. They are to teach us and lead us in a Christ-like manner. We are to look to them for guidance when it comes to Chris- tian teachings such as books we study and speakers we listen to. When it comes down to it, it is our responsibility to praise God, study His word, be a witness to others of His love and grace by serving our communities and church, love our husbands, teach our children, to depend on our spiritual leaders for guidance and to teach other women to do likewise.
