Submitted by: Calvin M. Johnson, Dean • Date: September 23, 2022

We are looking forward to celebrating 71 years of continuous partnership with Kentucky at the “Kentucky Night” on October 4, 2022, when we will be launching the Student Chapter of the KVMA at Auburn. We will have guests from the KY Department of Agriculture, Board of Veterinary Examiners, and Office of the State Veterinarian come to speak with our students about Ken- tucky’s application and licensing requirements, as well as job opportunities in Kentucky. We thank the KVMA and its Board for supporting this effort.

Kentucky Graduates: In the AU CVM Class of 2022, there were 38 Kentucky students in a total class of 119. Tese students’ performance on the NAVLE (96% pass rate) once again surpassed the national average of 90%. Tuition for Kentucky residents is currently $27,254 per year, which is the 7th lowest of 32 colleges in the U.S. Kentucky students attending Auburn are sav- ing about $102,000 in tuition and fees due to Kentucky’s investment in the SREB through the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). Average student debt of Kentucky students is $140,000, compared to the national average of $218,000. About half of these Kentucky residents immediately returned to Kentucky to practice and over 92% expressed an intent to return.

Te College of Veterinary Medicine has 149 faculty for its 512 students. In addition, preceptors and externship mentors play an important role in practice-based education. Te Veterinary Teaching Hospital treated 27,147 cases in 2021, providing an ideal caseload for teaching and specialty service delivery. Te students are given the opportunity to engage with specialists throughout the curriculum. Case-based instruction in pre-clinical years and clinical education of 4th year veterinary students continues to be a high priority.

Employment in the Class of 2022 was strong. At graduation, 68% were employed in veterinary medicine, 20% in advanced training, and 12% were not yet committed to a specific job. Of the students entering practice, private practice employment out- paced corporate practice employment by 2:1. Students averaged 3.1 job offers at the time of graduation. Te mean starting salary of those employed in veterinary medicine was $107,000/year. To facilitate successful employment, the college will be hosting 55 employers on October 23, 2022 for Career Connect.

In 2022, $932,147 was awarded in scholarships. 195 students received scholarships at an average of $4,780 per recipient. Eight full scholarships were awarded, for the first time, for students interested in large animal medicine, surgery, or theriogenology through the Bartlett Scholars Program.

Te college’s 115th Annual Conference and Te J.T. Vaughan Equine Conference and Class Reunions will be held from October 20-23, 2022.

Financial Advising: Te KVMA and Alabama VMA have jointly funded (up to $6,000 each, annually) a counseling engage- ment with Machen-McChesney, an accounting and financial management practice in Auburn. Tey have offered up to 60 counseling sessions per year. Glen Sellers, MBA, a faculty member in our college, meets with students prior to their meeting with Machen-McChesney, coordinating their preparation of financials including net worth, balance sheet, student loans, income, budgets, etc. Tis has proven to be a valuable investment in student success.

USDA Veterinary Services Grant: Recruitment and Support of Veterinarians in Underserved Areas of Kentucky. Te AU CVM has completed a USDA grant to support rural practices and to prepare, financially support, and mentor senior students/ new graduates for employment in shortage areas in the four USDA-designated shortage areas in Kentucky. A total of 21 hospital assessments have been conducted in 14 different counties in rural KY. Te grant provides rural practitioners with network- ing sessions, CE, and matching programs for preceptorship students (20 students have conducted preceptorships and 20 have conducted externships in rural KY). Glen Sellers has engaged 23 Kentucky practices in 19 counties through his Practice Man- agement rotation. Te project is working: Of 20 preceptors, 19 (95%) accepted jobs in rural practice (one pursued a military commitment and plans to subsequently join a rural practice). Of these accepted rural practice jobs, 15 are in rural KY. An effort is underway to continue this project through a project with the KADB, KVMA and the AU CVM.

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, we sincerely appreciate the continuing support of the KVMA. 
