BREATHITT VETERINARY CENTER DIAGNOSTIC ROUNDS (CONT.)
specimens are: cytologic examination of gastric swabs and/or fresh feces stained with carbol-fuchsin acid fast stain. For tests to distinguish between species of cryptosporidia, samples can be forwarded to diagnostic labo- ratories specializing in infectious disease testing of exotic animals. Antemortem results should be interpreted together with history and clinical symptoms since mammalian cyptosporidia (C. parvum and C. muris) have been reported in fecal samples of healthy animals.6
Figure 1. Cytology. Swab of gastric mucosa. Several round, thick walled, acid fast stained oocysts (arrow heads) are observed, mixed with bacterial rods and cocci. (Carbol-fuchsin- acid fast stain, magnification 500x).
