R.V.: Bill, tell us about your perspective on why EMSSI is so relevant for IAVM members.
Bill Flynn: I have over 20 years of experience in the security and counter-terrorism business. To the point made earlier, I’ve never seen a threat environment as dynamic and as complex as it is right now. I terrorism investigations taking place as we speak in every state in the country. We have homegrown violent extremism, individuals that are really not on the radar screen that make it very challenging who be- come radicalized through sophisticated social media. We have cyber, and active shooter threats, as well as complex attacks as we’ve seen overseas in Paris, Brussels and here in the U.S. in San Bernadino, Or- lando and the Boston Marathon. This demonstrates the complexity of the threat environment we live in.
R.V.: In your opinion, Bill, what makes EMSSI so unique?
Bill Flynn: Here’s what I believe makes this initiative so important nation’s critical infrastructure. Since 80% of it is privately owned and managed, building those relationships and partnerships were critical. These guidelines are not being written by government or by security experts in a closed room. They are being written and developed with broad collaboration and input from IAVM convention center mem- bers and other industry organizations and entities that bring exhibi- tion and convention business to our members.
