Resources: Pastoral Performance Reviews

by KEVIN STONE, PRESIDENT

In our last issue we introduced a series of articles high- lighting the resources that have been developed as part of our Vision Statement, “Strengthening our churches with timely resources that strengthen their leaders.”

One of the new resources we have released is the

FEBC Pastor Performance Review. This is a helpful tool that can be used by the elders of your church to review how your pastor is doing in his ministry.

Reviewing the performance of a pastor can be a

tricky subject and a difficult task. For those reasons, it is easy for church leaders to shy away from the topic altogether. Here are two of the challenges we face:

1. A pastor does not produce a tangible product

and his ministry is not easily measured or quantified. God rewards us for faithfulness and, as we are faithful to him, he provides the results he desires. However, a pastor still has responsibilities to God, the church, the staff, the elders, and the people — and he must be a faithful steward of the time he is given.

2. A pastor typically does not report to one su-

pervisor. Getting a group with varying preferences and opinions to agree on how the pastor is doing can be a difficult process.

Despite these challenges, it is important to ensure

that a pastor is aware of expectations and apprised of whether he is meeting them. A lack of clear commu- nication can result in frustration on the part of the pastor or other church leaders. Unexpressed expecta- tions are a recipe for ministry burnout, disharmony, or failure.

We have provided a Performance Review that

evaluates the “ABC’s” of pastoral ministry. A biblical pastor will be:

• Able (1 Peter 5:1-7) • Blameless (Titus 1:6-7) • Compassionate (James 5:14-16) • Devout (Titus 1:8-9) The FEBC Pastor Performance Review assesses

how your pastor is doing in each of these areas by eval- uating 35 specific indications of these qualities.

As with each of our resources, this tool comes with

the backing of people. If your church needs assistance with something, do not hesitate to contact Gary, our Ministries Coordinator, at ministries@febcministries.org.

We pray that this tool will be useful in strengthening your pastor, your elders, and your church.
