Her Best Work by MICHELLE WILKINSON
What’s in a name? Actually names matter! Mom. They come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. Some wear pants, most hate ants, and all possess this one simple and lovely quality. She loves — I mean, seriously!
Our pause on Mother’s Day can, for some, give
remembrance to the challenges one would like to forget, whether now or in the past. They just don’t sit right in our hearts and we can be grieved by them. And it’s hard to let them go. Allow me to offer you some encouragement through this verse. Psalm 71:6 says, “Yes, you have been with me from birth; from my mother’s womb you have cared for me. No wonder I am always praising you!” (nlt). What does it say? He has been with you since your birth and has cared for you!
He has kept you close all of your days. Just like your child(ren), you are fearfully and wonderfully
made! He knows you well. He loves you with His infinite love. It is easy to forget that, isn’t it? Is it not God, who fearfully and wonderfully made you to be who you are for your child(ren) and for His glory? Absolutely, yes! Now that’s an encouragement to all of us. God, who made you and gives you the grace to hope in Him, will give you the perseverance to live it out.
It’s good to respect those whom we admire as
mothers and want to learn from. Older women who have blazed the trail of motherhood make for good mentors, and I certainly encourage you to find one. We can learn from them but we are not them. Com- parison will lead to discouragement or arrogance. Women, we tend to compare ourselves to other wom- en. We are not to compare ourselves. We are who God made us to be and that includes parenting.
