The American Institute of Professional Geologists’ Public Service Award was estab- lished by the Executive Committee in 1982 in recognition of one of its primary pur- poses: service to the public. In 1992, it was renamed the John T. Galey, Sr., Memo- rial Public Service Award, in posthumous honor of our fourth President, whose long professional career was a continuum of service to both the geological and the general public.
I would like to thank the Institute and the Awards Com- mittee for recognizing me with the John T. Galey, Sr Memo- rial Award. What an honor! So many of us put extraordinary effort into our professional lives, and to be recognized by my AIPG colleagues is truly something special. AIPG has been a constant presence in my professional life and, I believe, one of the reasons for my professional success. I started attending the monthly AIPG MN Section meetings in 2003, while at my first job with Terracon Consultants – on the advice of my mentor at Terracon, Paul Wiese. Attending technical talks, conferences,
field trips, and volunteering with AIPG helps me develop a net- work of professionals that I can learn from and helps me con- tinually develop skills and knowledge. Our work as geologists is important and connected to public health, sustainability, tech- nology, and more. Holding ourselves to high standards means we’re putting out best work out there and earning the trust of the public. So, when it comes time to put in that extra hour to perfect a report or mentor a new colleague, it’s worth it and our community is better for it. Thank you!!!

Since 1984, AIPG has conferred Honorary Membership to those who have an exem- plary record of distinguished service to the profession and to the Institute.
It is tremendous honor to have been awarded Honorary Membership
in AIPG and I thank AIPG’s leadership and membership for this distin- guished award. I deeply regret not being able to attend this year’s Awards Banquet in Marquette, MI, but previous commitments took precedence.
It has been over 37 years since I became involved with AIPG, and I must say that my relationship with AIPG and its members has been a highlight of both my professional and personal life. I distinctly remember being a young geologist new to the Florida Section in the early 80’s, when CPG Richard Hunter, a new mining client of my company, asked me, “you’re an AIPG member, right?” I stuttered and said,” What’s

AIPG?” Well, that led into a long discussion about AIPG by Richard and his offer to be one of my sponsors to become a Certified Professional Geologist. As it turns out, this was one of the most important lunch meetings of my life, and several months later, I received my CPG from AIPG, and the rest is history.
I recount this story for one reason – if Richard Hunter had not taken the interest and time to explain to me about AIPG and followed up through the application process, I may never have become an AIPG member. It is important for all of us to take an interest and spend time with younger
