Christine F. Lilek CPG-10195 Wisconsin Section

The Martin Van Couvering Memorial Service to the Institute Award was established by the Executive Committee in 1979 in posthumous honor of the first president of the Institute. Martin Van Couvering made the presidency a full-time occupation for the first two years of the Institute’s history. His dynamic lead- ership, diplomacy, and organizational abilities established the solid foundation from which the Institute has grown. Few, if any, have given so much to the Institute.

Story Tellers

Stories are important to me. Being a part of a never-ending story provides a place for me in this vast expanding universe. Receiving the Martin Van Couvering’s Memorial Service Award in 2022 reassures me that we are still a part of the story together. We continue to serve AIPG as our found- ing members served in their day. Let me share a part of my service story with you.

In 1995, I approached our Wisconsin AIPG Section Executive Committee and asked if I could become their Newsletter Editor. They said I could if I would run for the Vice President office. Telling our geoscience stories were important to me. So, I began my Section leadership roles for many years and then followed that with many years of mentoring other members into leadership positions. Finally, in 2013 I became the Newsletter Editor for our Section. I continue to create and tell the Wisconsin AIPG Section geoscience stories in our newsletter and on social media. Section storytelling naturally led me to National AIPG service to gather more of our never-ending story.

There are many organizations and groups in our world, working on many valuable and meaningful activities. I’d be very happy and fulfilled joining their memberships and working on their goals and causes, but AIPG has something those other organizations do not. They have the Story.

What story you ask? The story of our past, our present and our future. AIPG continues to interpret and publish the Story as ethically and accurately as we can.

Our members together study and research the past hidden in the rocks, water, and air. We evalu- ate and measure the affects we are currently having on those resources and then we work to restore,

improve, and protect those resources for future generations.

What other member organization is involved in discovering and revealing the parts of the earth’s diverse inanimate and living things? What other member organization provides the space and time to understand how all these parts are intercon- nected and essential for life on earth? For me, the organization is AIPG.

Being a part of a valued organization carries responsibilities as well as opportunities and enjoy- ment. I have realized that AIPG’s story is not complete, and as one of AIPG’s storytellers, I have the responsibility to broaden the story collection to places and people we have not included.

We are trying to broaden the AIPG story in our 2023 National AIPG Conference planning. The 2023 National AIPG Conference is being planned by 3 Sections (Illinois/Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky) and will be held in Covington, Kentucky from September 16 – 19, 2022. We are trying hard to include speakers and attendees that have not had the chance to attend or speak in the past due to undeveloped partnerships, travel costs, time con- straints, or mobility issues. We are including steps to broaden diversity, inclusion, and sustainability. These are baby steps that hopefully will grow to maturity in our never-ending story.

Changing storylines can only be done with sup- port from our members. So, as we move forward, when we ask for your volunteer time, opening your homes or offices to members, or monetary support, please consider becoming a part of this new chapter by saying “Yes, I too want to be a part of the never- ending service story of AIPG”. I believe Martin Van Couvering would be proud of our service. I am.

I have realized that AIPG’s story is not complete, and as one of AIPG’s storytellers, I have the responsibility to broaden the story collection to places and people we have not included.
